About Mehendi
A timeless tradition...

Mehendi or henna is an important part of the ritualistic art of adornment, a symbol of beauty and considered a must for all ceremonial occassions. It creates an aura of glamour and imbues mystery and allure. It is a tradition that dates back into the ages, a part of a culture varied, rich and colorful, and distinctly Indian. It is an essential part of the elaborate marriage ceremony, and is considered a sign of auspiciousness and good luck.

Mehendi is a thick, smooth herbal paste made from the finely ground leaves of the henna plant(scientific name - lawsonia inermis), and mixed with lemon juice and oil. When the paste is washed off, it leaves a stain ranging from orange red to a rich burgundy color. It is safe and painless and temporary, having been used for cosmetic and medicinal purposes for the last 5000 years in the Middle East, Africa, India and Pakistan. In recent times, when Madonna and other Hollywood celebrities adorned their hands with henna, they started a trend making this art popular all over the world.
